Where Are They Now? Part II

Picking up where we left off yesterday…

Let’s check in on some former Nationals who are now on AL teams, starting in the AL East. The Baltimore Orioles have Richard Bleier on their major league roster. He found his stride pitching in the Washington Nationals minor leagues during the 2015 season. He took that success to the New York Yankees the following year before he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles last year. He will look to continue his strong MLB impression into 2018.

On the Boston Red Sox there are two former Nationals catchers. Sandy Leon played games for the Nationals between 2012-2014, but has been with the Red Sox since 2015. Dan Butler played with the Syracuse Chiefs in 2015 but has spent most of his career playing in the minors for the Red Sox.

Wilson Ramos with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Buffalo and #Spanning are both on Tampa Bay Rays this year. After Wilson Ramos’ tenure with the Nationals was over he signed a two-year deal. Denard Span was traded from the San Francisco Giants this previous off season.

Marco Estrada was drafted by Washington in 2005. He found his stride in the minors in 2008 and made his debut that year. He pitched a few games in 2009 before he was claimed by the Brewers before the 2010 season. Before the 2015 season he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays for Adam Lind. The Toronto Blue Jays also have Tyler Clippard in camp on a minor league deal. He is now a World Series Champion, but had a hard time finding a major league deal this offseason.

The New York Yankees had both Danny Espinosa and Adam Lind in camp before they signed Neil Walker to play second base. The move took away a back-up infield role that both players were fighting for so both have been released and looking for roles elsewhere.

Lucas Giolito with the Chicago White Sox.

The AL Central have a plethora of former Nationals. The Chicago White Sox gutted the Nationals minor league system when Mike Rizzo traded for Adam Eaton. The White Sox now have Lucas Giolito in their rotation and Reynaldo Lopez as a swingman. They also received Dane Dunning in that trade who is now ranked as the 92nd prospect in all of baseball. Former Nationals Xaiver Cedeno and Matt Skole are also in camp on minor league contracts.

The Cleveland Indians have former National Matt Belisle who performed well for the Nationals in 2016 before he ended up being the Twins closer last year. Additionally, they have super utility-player Michael Martinez who played in the Nationals minor league system from 2006-2009.

The Detroit Tigers have Jordan Zimmermann who played for the Nationals from 2009-2015 before he signed with the Detroit Tigers. Derek Norris is also in camp on a minor league deal. Norris had two tenures with the Nationals. The first started with him being drafted in 2007 and ended when he was traded for Gio Gonzalez before the 2012 season. Before last season, Norris signed another contract with the Nationals but was released after the signing of Matt Wieters.

The Kansas City Royals have Nathan Karns who has pitched for Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners since he pitched for Washington in 2013. Additionally, Mike Broadway is in camp after pitching in the Nationals minor leagues in 2013 and 2017.

Zach Duke agreed to make the Minnesota Twins his eighth professional team by agreeing to a one-year deal. He played for the Nationals in 2012 and 2013. Former bench player Chris Heisey is fighting for an MLB job after spending time with the Nationals the past two years.

Alex Meyer with the LA Angels.

The AL West has many former Nationals pitchers to conclude our list. First the Angels have two pitchers, Alex Meyer, who was a 2011 first-round draft pick, and Ian Krol, who the Nationals received back when they traded Mike Morse to the Seattle Mariners.

The Seattle Mariners have Marc Rzepczynski has their lefty-specialist who played for the Nationals in 2016. Additionally, the Texas Rangers have the final piece of the super rotation from 2012,  Doug Fister. They also have former Nationals minor leaguers Paolo Espino and Destin Hood on minor league deals.

The Nationals favorite trade partner, Oakland Athletics, have four former Nationals in camp. Yusmeiro Petit and Blake Treinen are currently on MLB contracts while Steve Lombardozzi and Sheldon Neuse are hoping for a chance at the big leagues.

That wraps up the players currently in camp. Keep up to date with our Twitter and Instagram as we watch their progress throughout spring training and keep you informed about any new signings or roster moves. Also check in tomorrow to see the extensive list of former Nationals who are falling victim to a slow offseason and waiting for a chance to play.
