The Commanders started off the year with Carson Wentz at the helms but turned into a QB carousel rather quickly leaving another problem in D.C.
The problem being: who is going to play quarterback in 2023 for the Commanders?
There are obvious, and yet still some intriguing, answers here as names like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, Taylor Heinicke, and Sam Howell all float around. Yes, that list is in that particular order for a reason.
The intriguing free agent picks of Rodgers and Brady would be ideal. These are the best-case scenario picks, the Lamborghini’s of the choices. The resumes and accolades for both are well known. Proven winners who are practically staples in the playoffs. Either of these guys gets this team above .500 and into the playoffs no question.
They may seem far-fetched options but these guys need to stay in the NFC with a team with an above average defense. No way they go to the AFC to compete with MVP front-runners, Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen and cannot forget the up and coming “kids” of Joe Burrows, Justin Herbert, and Trevor Lawrence. Let those guys fight it out year in and year out.
That being said these two guys are arguably the best two QBs in the NFC on any given weekend with their biggest competition being NFC East foe, Jalen Hurts. The NFC East is loaded but a star signal caller could be the difference between playing a meaningful January football game under the lights or watching on your couch.
Now the best fit for Rodgers is more than likely back with the Packers to not mess with his immortality in Green Bay. Brady does not seem inclined to go back into the cold and who can blame him really so it looks like Tampa or Miami for him but hey one can dream.
Now onto the obvious answers of who not to start at quarterback next year, those names are Howell, Heinicke, and Wentz. Wentz has not been the same since his 2018 Eagles season. He is still a viable NFL starter he just seems more like a stopgap here. Heinicke is someone you want to play for, he is a gamer but he is not the answer. Look at the 2021 season where he played 16 games leading the football team to a 7-10 record while throwing for 3,419 yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. That just is not going to get it done in the NFL as a starter. Howell well he will be a second year pro and just is not ready for the fast paced NFL game. A prolific passer who produced crazy numbers while at North Carolina he could benefit from a seasoned vet taking him under his wing.
The Commanders offense features Terry Mclaurin, Jahan Dotson, Brian Robinson and Logan Thomas. Then the defense is stout only getting better with the likes of Chase Young maturing and getting healthy. These are viable offensive options with a young defense that makes one think that even bringing in a game manager like jimmy Garoppolo or even Derek Carr can get the job done.
This is the multimillion-dollar question that needs answered this off-season by the Commanders and will have the biggest impact on their 2023 season.
